Cup won. Limerick Sport Eagles are National Cup champions, beating Drogheda Wolves 83–67 in the Men's Division 1 final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght this afternoon.
The Eagles controlled it for long stretches and held the Wolves at arm's length through the closing quarter. Drogheda kept coming. The Eagles always had an answer when the lead came under threat.
Ryan Leonard was named final MVP after scoring 24. The new signing has been one of the club's best players all season, and he had his hand on this one from the start, scoring early and keeping the Wolves at bay whenever they edged closer.
This was a result the Eagles had been building towards since the autumn. They came through Round One away to Portlaoise Panthers, 83–71, then beat Carrick Cruisers 81–50 in the quarter-final. A composed 84–68 win over Templeogue in the semi-final at the MTU Arena in Cork on 3 January booked the trip to Tallaght. The Eagles had also beaten Drogheda in the league back in November, so there was little mystery between the sides.
A big travelling support made the trip up from Limerick on the supporters' bus, leaving the East Gate car park early and turning a corner of the arena blue. It is the club's first major silverware of the season. The focus now switches back to the league.
