They had already beaten Tramore once on Saturday; in the final they did it again, with a trophy on the line.
There is a particular test in beating the same team twice in a day, and the Limerick Lions U14 boys passed it. Having seen off the hosts in the round-robin, they met them once more in the final and finished the better side.
The path there was unbroken. Neptune were beaten in the pool, then Waterford Vikings, then Tramore in the group stage too. By the time the final came around, the Lions had not dropped a game all day.
Final rematches are awkward. The opponent has watched you, knows your shape, and wants it badly. Tramore had the home support and a point to prove. The Lions held their nerve and came out on top again.
Winning a one-day tournament outright is no small thing at this age. You play in the morning, recover on the bench, and go again. To do it against good Munster and south-east opposition takes legs and a clear head, and a fair bit of credit goes to the coaches who put the work in this season.
Champions, then, and unbeaten with it. For a U14 group, a day like this is the kind that sticks. The bus home to Limerick will have been a happy one.
